The Lovely Bones (book report)

I read the Lovely Bones. It is about a girl named Susie Salmon. She was very curious. In the book she was very interested in the way that her teacher had built the secret underground room.  She was very curious when she was at school one day and Ray tells her to come up into the rafters of the school auditorium and skip homeroom with him. Susie was very caring. When she is up in heaven she is constantly worrying about her family and friends. She wishes that she could come down from her heaven and comfort them and tell them it’s alright. When her father talks to her murderer in his back yard and helps him to put up his bridal tent she tries to will him to realize the danger that he’s in and give him a warning not to mess with him. While she is in heaven all she does is watch her family, her friends, and her killer. She wants to be sure that they are alright, except for her murderer, she still wants revenge for him killing her. She likes to see how their lives play out and when they get into tuff spots she tries as hard as she can to help them and make things alright. Susie is also very considerate of others. When she is still alive she was always worrying that she wouldn’t be a good enough kisser. She was deeply in love with a boy named Ray and she was waiting for a kiss from him, but she never thought that she would be a good enough kisser for him. I think that Susie was a deep thinker. She talks about how her mother was like a different person without all her make-up on. Susie was also not judgmental. When she was younger she would look at her mom sitting on their porch, and would stare into her eyes, and see what her dad meant when he called her ocean eyes. Her eyes were very blue, and they seemed to swallow everything up. Susie is very responsible. When she was younger she would help her dad make ships in a bottle. She would hold the bottle small glass bottle while her father pulled the string that raised the masts and burn the string.

I liked the Lovely Bones because it is written in a way so that when you read it the words just seem to flow off of the pages. Another reason why I like it is because the story is very well written. The author used a lot of details and describes the things around her very well. The Lovely Bones had some “edge of your seat” suspense, and some romance, and a little bit of horror at the beginning of the book when she is murdered. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes suspense books or science fiction stories. This book has a lot of flash backs in it that tell the story of how Susie came to be what she was. My favorite part of the story would probably be when she was describing how her mother looks before she puts on her makeup and drinks her coffee. The author uses very good descriptive words and uses similes to describe how her mom’s eyes seem to be like giant blue endless oceans, pulling you in and drowning you in there dept. Another part I liked was a suspenseful moment. Her sister is trying to break into her murderer’s house to find proof that he really did murder Susie and to prove to her dad that his assumption was right. The whole time she is in the house he is moments away, driving home, when she starts to check the rooms she hears a car door slam. That is when she knows, deep down in her soul that this man killed her sister, and she has to get out with proof before she is next. I liked this part because it made me think about how I would feel in her situation, trying to find evidence that someone killed my sister would be terrible. I would have the guts to break into somebody’s house, even if I suspected them of murder, it would only make me stay away from them and their house even more. That part of the book inspired me. I felt how much responsibility was on her shoulders and how badly she needed to know for her father as much as for herself, that her sister’s murderer be brought to justice. I would not recommend this book to the faint of heart or anybody who is easily spooked, if you read The Lovely Bones it may scare you a little. But even though some parts were gross, and some were just nasty, I still liked this book.

  1. You've done a nice job of outlining characteristics and then supporting then! If you take each new adjective and make a new paragraph, you'll have a beautiful organization too rather than one long paragraph.

  2. Pt 2 - also nicely done but break into paragraphs.
